What is Safeguarding

Safeguarding is about sports organisations ensuring that their staff, volunteers, operations and programmes do no harm to children or or adults, or expose them to harassment, abuse or exploitation.

It is, however, increasingly becoming best practice to think about how we safeguard everyone in our organisations at all times, including protecting staff and volunteers from inappropriate behaviour such as bullying and harassment.

There are two elements to safeguarding children and adults in sport from harm. The first is proactive and involves sports organisations in assessing risks and putting in place policies, procedures and practice to PREVENT harassment, abuse or exploitation in sport.

The second is reactive and involves how sports organisations should RESPOND to concerns that a child or adult in the sport has experienced, or may be at risk of experiencing harassment, abuse or exploitation.

Aim of this website

The aim of this website is to support the development of best safeguarding practice in  sports organisations in Africa by directing visitors to safeguarding resources, training, and events. Taking into consideration resource constraints on the Continent of Africa we try to sign post to resources that are free to access.

We recognise the role of the International Safeguards for Children in Sport Working Group, Safe Sport International, and the African Union Sports Council in promoting Safeguarding in Sport internationally and in Africa. We encourage you to visit the International Safeguards for Children in Sport website where you can take the pledge to safeguard children in sport.
